FIBA Asia U16: Philippines beat Japan, Finishes on Top of Group


        VIETNAM—Energen Pilipinas Under-16 stunned Japan, 83-72 , to nail the No. 1 spot in its second-round group in the Fiba Asia U16 tournament Monday night at the Khanh Hoa Sports Center here in Vietnam.

        Jay Alejandro, a Mapua high standout, started his phenomenal show by dropping 19 points in the first half as the Philippines staged a rampant second-quarter run for a 48-36 halftime lead. He then finished with 34 points to lead the scoring for the Filipinos.

       The young Nationals, who dealt Japan’s first loss in five games, wrapped up their second-round run in Group F with a perfect 5-0 record. The Philippines will clash with Iraq, the fourth seed in Group E, in the knockout quarterfinal stage on Wednesday. It was the biggest challenge yet for the young Nationals, who rolled past their first four opponents by a whopping average of 71.5 points

       Defending champion China claimed the No. 1 slot with a 5-0 record in Group E following a 73-42 rout of Korea (4-1) Monday afternoon in a rematch of the 2009 edition’s finals. Both teams also advanced to the quarterfinals along with Group E’s Lebanon (2-3) and Iraq (2-3). In Group F, Indonesia (3-2) and Saudi Arabia (2-3) finished behind the Philippines and Japan.
