Donaire vs. Narvaez Results: Donaire via Unanimous Decision

WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten WBO super flyweight king Omar Narvaez (35-1-2, 19 KOs) on Sunday Morning (Phil Time) in the Theater at the newly renovated Madison Square Garden in New York City. Donaire was the aggressor and outworked Narvaez in every round. Narvaez stayed very defensive the entire fight and seemed content to take his first loss. Scores were 120-108 on all three cards.

While it was a dominating performance from start to finish, Donaire just couldn’t find a way to hurt Narvaez who did nothing but shell up looking to survive. After a slow feeling-out process in the opening stanza the fight fell into a rhythm of Narvaez cautiously moving with Donaire seeking a way to attack through his guard. The ‘Filipino Flash’ opened up in the fourth landing an array of fast and powerful punches but his opponent used a lot of savvy to cover up and survive. In the middle rounds and down the stretch Donaire continued to attack while Narvaez continued to shell up offering no resistance in the offense department. After twelve easy albeit unexciting rounds were complete Donaire was ahead to retain his 118-pound crown. Donaire, who will now move up in weight to seek out bigger fights, commented post fight: “Now I know how Manny Pacquiao felt when he fought Joshua Clottey.

Unbeaten NABF featherweight champion Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (27-0, 23 KOs) impressively annihilated Juan Carlos Martinez (19-13-1, 7 KOs) in round four. Garcia dropped Martinez with a left hook in round three and floored him twice more in round four before the bout was waved off. Time was 2:40. Garcia, rated WBC #3, WBA #3, WBO #3 and IBF #11, is one of the best finishers in boxing.

Undefeated super flyweight Jonathan “La Bomba” Gonzalez (5-0, 5KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico won a six round unanimous decision over Jose Rivera (3-3-2) of New Rochelle, NY. The first round of the fight was an exciting exchange were Gonzalez was moving, feinting, and landing combination while Rivera pressed the action while holding a high guard. This continued throughout the remaining five rounds but with lackluster action. The fight went all six rounds with two judges at scoring it 60-53 while one judge scored it 59-54 for Jonathan “La Bomba” Gonzalez.

Undefeated light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan (10-0, 7KOs) of Sharon, PA scored a fifth round stoppage over Anthony Pietantonio (7-8, 5Kos) of Long Beach, NY. Pietrantonio started the fight looking focused and landing the better shots until Monaghan responded with thudding left hooks to Pietrantonio’s head and body. Over the next four rounds Monaghan landed the harder more damaging shots. Shortly after Pietrantonio lost his mouthpiece Monaghan connected with a stiff right hand to the head while Pietrantonio was against the ropes. Pietrantonio took a lot of damage and referee Eddie Claudio called the fight at 2:51 for a TKO victory for Monaghan.

Canadian junior middleweight prospect Mikael Zewski (11-0, 7 KOs) wasted no time in demolishing Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Keuntray Henson (4-3, 1 KO). A hard right hand dropped Henson hard only moments into the bout. Henson barely beat the count, only to be dropped again by a follow-up left hook, convincing referee Gary Rosato to waive off the bout at 1:27 of round 1.

Long Island, NY’s Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin improved to 4-0 (2), dropping Miami, Florida’s Jose Segura Torres (2-3-2, 1 KO) once in round one, and twice in round two in a welterweight bout scheduled for 4 rounds. Cletus was simply too strong for Torres, bloodying his opponent’s mouth and nose and rocking him several times with powerful right hands throughout the bout. A right to the body dropped Torres in round 2, and a follow-up left hand caused referee Eddie Claudio to halt the bout at 2:52 of round 2.

In a largely uneventful bout, Long Island, NY’s Tommy “The Razor” Rainone (16-4, 4 KOs) won a lackluster 6 round unanimous decision over 36-year-old Brad Jackson (13-6, 7 KOs) of Denver, CO. All three judges scored the welterweight fight for Rainone by scores of 60-54, 59-55, and 58-56.

Lightweight Mike Brooks, of Oceanside, NY, improved to 6-0 (1 KO) with a 4 round unanimous decision win over Eddie Ramirez (6-10-1, 3 KOs) of Laredo, Texas. Brooks went to the body from the opening bell, nailing Ramirez with right hooks throughout the contest. Ramirez showed his toughness in round 3, fighting Brooks on even terms until the New Yorker turned his activity up a notch with sharp combinations. After 4 competitive rounds, all three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Brooks.
