This is a good news for most of the Barangay Ginebra fans who wants to change the way the team struggles to win. The PBA on Tuesday received a three-way trade proposal involving
Ginebra, B-MEG, and Barako Bull that would allow the Gin Kings to shore
up its frontcourt rotation.
InterAKTV broke the news early Tuesday morning that Ginebra was eyeing B-MEG’s Rico Maierhofer and Allein Maliksi. In the same deal, the Gin Kings would send Yancy de Ocampo to B-MEG and Jimbo Aquino to Barako Bull. In a text message, PBA commissioner Chito Salud confirmed the details
of the deal. Ginebra would also send second round picks in 2014 and
2015 to Barako as part of the trade. The transaction, however, is still subject to approval by Salud, who
has the power to veto or modify deals which he deems unfair.
Maierhofer won the league’s Rookie of the Year award in 2010, but is
coming off an ACL injury which caused him to miss parts of last season.
Maliksi, on the other hand, is the No. 8 overall pick in this year’s
draft and was the inaugural Most Valuable Player of the PBA D-League. Ginebra has been looking to upgrade its frontcourt since the
departure of starting power forward Rudy Hatfield, who left the team
midway through last season. De Ocampo was the top overall pick in 2002, but has been a backup
center for most of his journeyman career. Aquino was picked eighth
overall in the first round of last year’s draft, but has languished in
Ginebra’s crowded backcourt rotation.
