Sinag Pilipinas vs Thailand |
Sinag Pilipinas reached the gold medal round in the Southeast Asian
Games (SEAG) men’s basketball by beating Malaysia, 103-74, in the semis
held at the Britama Arena in Indonesia.
The Filipino dribblers slipped away in the fourth quarter after figuring in 3 closely-fought quarters against the Malaysians. Sinag Pilipinas, led by mainstays Keifer Ravena, Greg Slaughter and
Cliford Hodge, only led by an average of 4 points against Malaysia in
the first 3 quarters, 23-19, 44-41 and 49-44. But RR Garcia started hitting his mark in the fourth quarter to spark Sinag Pilipinas’ breakaway from Malaysia. Slaughter topscored for the Philippines with 16 points. Hodge added 12, while Garcia chipped in 11.
Thailand defeated Indonesia in their semis game last Friday with only a
three-point margin, 65-62, that will send the hometeam down to a battle
for bronze with Malaysia this afternoon. Attaporn
Lertmalaiporn knocked down two free-throws in the dying moments of the
game to cap a 22-10 fourth quarter rally for Thailand in the other
semifinal. Lertmalaiporn was the leader of the scoring for Thailand, who fought back from a 43-52 deficit at the end of the third quarter. Andi Poedjakesuma had a game-high 26 points for Indonesia. Rony Gunawan contributed a dozen points.
The 2011 SEA Games Men’s Basketball Finals: Philippines vs Thailand happens Sunday at 7 p.m. UTC. Live telecast of the game is expected to be provided by Studio 23 and AKTV.
It can be remembered that the Philippine team crushed Thailand, 103-69, in a group stage game earlier this week which means that the nationals have a greater chance of winning the gold.
