Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta carved out a dominant 10 round Unanimous
Decision Victory against a taller and bigger opponent in Ricardo
Dominguez 34-6-2 (21 KOs) of Culiacan, Mexico.
Gesta 23-0-1 (12 KOs) was aggressive from the
get go as he dominated a taller opponent who was caught early with
overhand rights and left hooks from the undefeated Filipino fighter in
the opening round. The surprised Dominguez was placed in a defensive
mode early as Gesta would dart in and out of him while landing accurate
punches in the process. Gesta scored big in the 3rd round as a big left
and right hook combo nailed Dominguez, throwing the Mexican across the
ring from the force of the punches. Referee Joe Cortez gave Dominguez
the 8 count as Dominguez protested that it was a slip.Mercito Gesta earned improved his unbeaten
record to 24 in his debut in Sin City on the eve of Pacquiao - Marquez
III. It was a commanding performance seeing him in control from the
opening to the final bell. It was a much better performance from his
previous fight in Arizona in September where he was describe as
tentative and vulnerable. The three judges at ringside gave him scores
of 99-91, 97-92, 98-92.
Tanada eked out a tough Majority Decision
victory against a sturdy veteran in Juan Ruiz 23-7 (7 KOs) of Newhall,
CA. Tanada who turned 20 just yesterday, fought a toe to toe battle
against the 32 year old Ruiz who tested him in six grueling rounds.Tanada stunned Ruiz in the 4th with a vicious
uppercut which buckled the veteran. But Ruiz never went down and
instead mounted an attack of his own. Both fighters slugged it out in the 6th and
final round with hooks and uppercuts emanating from both fighters until
the final bell. The scores were an even 57 on one card and two scores of
58-56 on two other judges favoring Tanada. The victory was greeted with
applause and celebration by Filipinos.
Juan Miguel Elorde 10-0 (4 KOs) failed to
make it a clean sweep for all three Filipino fighters seeing action
tonight at a Top Rank promoted card here at the Mandalay Bay Resort and
Casino. While his compatriots, Allan Tanada and Mercito Gesta came up
successful with their respective matches. The grandson of the great
Flash Elorde faltered in his US debut in a 4 round Super Bantamweight
match against fellow unbeaten fighter Jerry Guevara 6-0 (5 KOs) of
Brownsville, TX.
One judge gave all four rounds to Guevara
while the other two had it a little closer at 39-37 for the now 7-0
Texan fighter. Elorde suffers his first lost in 11 outings.
