Ginebra to Rely on Former Best Import Chris Alexander in the Upcoming Commissioner's Cup

Chris Alexander, the last import to lead Ginebra to a title, will be back for another tour of duty in the upcoming Commissioners’ Cup. He confirmed it himself on his Facebook account. PBA Commissioner’s Cup Import Watch.

“It’s official. Ginebra here I come. Thanks for all the fans in the Philippines,” Alexander wrote. Sheryl Reyes, the Philippine agent who partners with Priority Sports that represents Alexander in the United States, said that a deal is already in place. “We were able to finalize it on Wednesday,” she said in a telephone interview. On Thursday, Reyes also made a deal for NBA veteran Dermarr Johnson, who will suit up for Barako Bull.

Ginebra's former coach Jong Uichico said Alexander is set to arrive in the country in the next three days. “We decided to give him another opportunity of playing here since he’s available and fit to play,” said Uichico. “He was one of the reasons why we won our last championship in the 2007-08 season. And we would try to maximize the opportunity of having him as an import as the tournament has an unlimited height for imports.” The 31-year-old, 7-foot-1 Alexander last played in the Korean Basketball League as an import for the Changwon LG Sakers. He led the league in rebounding with 10 rebounds per game and was second in blocks (1.7) aside from scoring 11.1 points per game.

Two weeks ago, Alexander thought he would end up playing for another PBA team when he blasted his former squad in his Facebook account, expressing displeasure that Ginebra was looking at other import options.  “I won your last championship, gave you your longest win streak in your team history after you replaced the first two imports imports with me because they gave you your worst start in team history, I was your last MVP of imports, I was the last import to average 20pts and 20 rebounds with four blocks. I have turned down contracts from other countries and other PBA teams just so I can come play again for you! Where is your respect and loyalty?” Alexander earlier wrote. “I made you bonuses and royalty. Your whole country is [waiting for] the re-signing of Chris Alexander. I get thousands of questions a day from the BGK fan base [about my return]. Well guys, I want to return and dying to return and waiting to return, but it is starting to look like I will, but to only find it will be with another team.” But that won’t be the case as Alexander will be back in a Ginebra uniform in March.
