Newly crowned WBO Champ Donnie Nietes |
We have a new Champ! Filipino Donnie Nietes scored a hard-earned unanimous decision over
game and gutsy Mexican Ramon Garcia late Saturday night to capture the
WBO light flyweight crown at the St. La Salle Coliseum.
Nietes won by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113. This writer scored the bout a draw. Nietes took command early with his precision-punching but he suddenly went cold beginning in the sixth stanza, giving Garcia the courage to get back at him with ferocity. Garcia even had the chance to put away Nietes several times but just couldn’t although at the end of the fight, he had the look of a winner since Nietes appeared as though he would pass out from exhaustion. Garcia’s camp said their fighter was robbed and as they were walking back to their dressing room, they were screaming for a rematch.“I was robbed. I want a rematch but not here. He’s a coward because he kept on running the whole time. Next time we meet, I’m gonna knock him out.” said Garcia moments after the fight. Nietes’ win was witnessed by a big crowd at the arena. The WBO light-fly title is Nietes’ second world crown after he had also held the WBO minimumweight title.
In other bout. 'Prince’ Albert Pagara of Maasin City wins over East African Shabani Madilu via unanimous decision and Filipino counterpart AJ ‘Bazooka’ Banal of Ermita, Cebu also defeated Mario Briones of Mexico via unanimous decision to defend his WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title.
